2008 "July 4th" Butterfly Counts

Tiger Swallowtail The Annual July 4 Butterfly Counts, sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association, are held in June and July each year. Snapshot data, collected annually from hundreds of locations in the U.S. and elsewhere, contributes to butterfly research. The counts are fun and educational and a good way for beginners to start learning to identify the species of the region.

Counts are led by people who can identify the butterflies of the region. Beginners are welcome (unless noted) as spotters and to learn. Contact count leaders several days ahead of time so they may plan the count.

Most counts take the better part of a day, with a break for lunch. Wear long pants, closed shoes, and socks. Bring a bag lunch, insect repellant, beverages, sunscreen, hat, etc. Bring a butterfly field guide and/or binoculars if you have them. Children under 13 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

A fee of U.S. $3 is required for each adult field observer on each count (whether or not they want their names published in the Count Report) to help defray printing and program costs. Children 12 and under are not charged the fee.

The counts below were compiled from announcements supplied to WABC and from the NABA Mid-Atlantic Butterfly Counts map. Most of the information on the counts listed below has been verified by the count leaders. Report any inaccuracies to the webmaster.
