Why would anyone invest the time, effort and money to make a garden for butterflies? Because butterflies are both lovely and beneficial, having them in your yard provides opportunities for close observation and photography, and it is just plain fun! Approximately three years ago, our family decided to attempt serious butterfly gardening. I've always loved butterflies, and I was inspired by the gardens of other Washington Area Butterfly Club members. We live in a typical, older Northern Virginia suburb with less than one-fourth acre of land. At the club meeting on February 24, I will present slides and information about some host and nectar plants which have grown well for us in this area, butterflies and caterpillars we have attracted to our yard, and butterfly gardens which can be visited at several local parks. Although I'm not an expert, I will share what has worked (and not worked) for us as beginning butterfly gardeners in the Washington metropolitan area.
