The Washington Area Butterfly Club and the Audubon Naturalist Society Present An ..
Afternoon Butterfly Walk with Robert Michael Pyle
Monday, May 4, 1:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Hughes Hollow, Maryland
The Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS) and the Washington Area Butterfly Club (WABC) are delighted to join as sponsors for a spring afternoon afield with Robert Michael Pyle. Dr. Pyle is author of the Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Butterflies, the Handbook for Butterfly Watchers, and many other books, including Wintergreen, which was award the John Burroughs Medal in 1986 as the year's best natural history book. Dr. Pyle is founder of the Xerces Society, a lively organization dedicated to invertebrate conservation. In recent years, Dr. Pyle has become a good friend of ANS and butterfliers in the Washington area, visiting often and co-leading several ANS forays. We have come to know Bob as an engaging teacher, a dedicated conservationist, and a fun companion in the field. Our program on the 4th is fairly unstructured. We'll wander through varied habitats and watch for butterflies, of course, but also take time to enjoy birds, wildflowers, and any other natural phenomena we might observe. Weather permitting, we could see a good variety of butterflies. Some butterflies are likely to be netted, handled carefully for close observation, and then released. Discussions in the field could range from conservationand environmental education philosophy to Bob's extended field searches for monarchs and Bigfoot across the western U. S.
Meet at 1:30 p.m. at the main Hughes Hollow Parking Area. Hughes Hollow is part of the McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in Montgomery County, Maryland. From the Beltway (495) just north of the Cabin John Bridge, take River Rd. (MD Rt. 193) west through Potomac Village, until you reach a T-junction after about 11 miles. Turn left here, onto the continuation of River Rd., and drive about 4 1/2 miles to Hughes Rd. Turn left then left again in about 100 yards onto Hunting Quarter Rd. (there is no choice but to turn left here). After about another 100 yards reach the parking area where we will meet.
There is no fee or registration procedure for this program, but all are welcome and we will "pass the hat" for Dr.Pyle. Bob is a free-lance naturalist/author author who must rely on programs of this nature for a major portion of his income. Payments of $10 - $15 per person are recommended. If paying by check, write it payable to Robert Michael Pyle. The sponsoring organizations are charging no fee, though Mark Garland of ANS will be soliciting pledges for his efforts in the upcoming "Birdathon" ANS fundraising event.
