September 8 -- Harry Pavulaan

Sterling, VA. On September 8, I observed a very recently-emerged Giant Swallowtail inspecting some Cosmos flowers across from Herndon Elementary School. This comes after several recent heavy rains. The individual may have been a very delayed second-brood individual, or possibly representative of a very atypical third brood for this area. Interestingly, though the species is somewhat rare in suburban western Fairfax County, another individual was observed at exactly the same place several years ago.
