WABC Field Trip

Baltimore Checkerspots and Other Butterflies of Frederick County's High Country

Saturday, June 20 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Led by Dick Smith

The Baltimore checkerspot is one of the most beautiful butterflies of our area, but not many people have seen it. The butterfly's wet-meadow habitat is quickly disappearing. But this trip to a sun-swept powerline right-of-way sliced through Frederick County's forested high country offers good possibilities to add the orange-and-black beauty to your life list. Last year during the Baltimore's brief flying season, the place was alive with them and other interesting butterflies. Expert Dick Smith will guide us. Bring water, snacks and sunscreen. There are no restrooms nearby. Because this is private land, we need to know how many people are going. Please register with Pat Durkin no later than June 18 - 202-483-7965 or e-mail <plusultra@aol.com>.

Getting there: Meet at 10 a.m. at the Park and Ride commuter parking lot at Exit 26 (Urbana-Buckeystown) off Route 270. From the Washington Beltway, take Route 270 north. Get off at Exit 26 (approximately 8 miles south of Frederick), and enter the lot, which is at the end of the ramp. We will caravan/carpool about 25 miles to the site, which is about 15 miles north of Frederick.
