What is Butterfly Gardening?

Butterfly gardening is simply making a garden to attract butterflies to your yard. This means planting nectar-rich flowers to attract adult butterflies, including host plants in your garden for caterpillars to feed on, and avoiding the use of chemicals (butterflies are insects, too!).

Due to continued habitat loss and widespread use of pesticides and herbicides, many of our native butterflies need whatever assistance we can provide them. This can be as simple as choosing native or nectar-rich flowers for the planters on an apartment balcony or as complicated as managing a parcel of land as a natural meadow.

Planning and planting your garden with our winged friends in mind is both important for their continued survival and rewarding for you, as you will learn when diverse and colorful butterflies you may never have seen begin to discover the banquet you have provided for them.
