Azure and Spring Butterfly Field Trip, Thompson Wildlife Management Area, near Linden, VA
- 11 AM – 1:30 PM. WABC Field Trip: members and their guests only.
The club’s Spring Azure field trip with butterfly expert Harry Pavulaan will now take place on Sunday, April 14. The cold temperatures predicted for April 7 made Azure sightings extremely unlikely. There has been a lot of interest in this field trip. If your schedule allows you to attend on the rescheduled date, please be certain to contact Harry first.
Harry, who has done extensive research on the region’s blue butterflies, will be looking for azures and other butterflies on the wing. He will show specimens of the two species of spring azure that we will be looking for and explain how to tell them apart. Harry will also show specimens of the two other azure species (Appalachian Azure and Summer Azure) found there at other times of the year. Techniques for safe handling of netted specimens will be demonstrated.
While field identification of the two Spring Azures is never 100% certain, with practice and a good set of eyes, enough individuals can still be identified to verify the presence of both species. Harry will attempt to identify these on the wing and will verify captured specimens before releasing them.
We should see plenty of West Virginia Whites, Duskywings and a variety of other early spring species. Bring binoculars, notepads and yes, even nets, if you are serious about improving your identification skills. We'll meet at 11:00 am at the northernmost parking area of G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area along Leeds Manor Road (Route 888). This is the fishing lake. Exit off Route 66 at Exit 18(?) for Markham, proceed north along Route 888 for approximately 4 miles. Watch for the lake through the trees on the left (west) side. The walk will be about 2 miles total, and two hours should be sufficient time. There are a few short stretches of strenuous uphill walking along a dirt roads but much of the walk is level. Dress for the weather, as it is always a few degrees colder there, and colder yet if clouds move in.
This trip is for WABC members and their guests only. There is no charge but reservations are required.
