Butterflies Through Binoculars, Centennial Park, Howard County, MD
Free and open to general public. 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. Sponsored by Howard County Bird Club, a chapter of the Maryland Ornithological Society. Dick Smith will lead a one-mile walk along park paths through lakeside, field, and marsh habitats with plentiful nectar plants, such as Joe-Pye Weed, thistle, New York ironweed, and swamp milkweed. Unexpected butterflies encountered in previous years were American Snout, Sleepy Orange, and Pipe Vine Swallowtail. Close-focus binoculars are recommended, but catch-and-release examination will be included. Meet at the west-end parking lot off Centennial Lane. Butterfly Hike at Soldiers Delight Serpentine Barrens, Owings Mills, MD
Free and open to general public. 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Sponsored by Soldiers Delight Visitors' Center. Meet at Soldiers Delight Visitors' Center. The Soldiers Delight Serpentine Barrens in western Baltimore County is the largest local area for viewing prairie-like grassland conditions and the many uncommon butterfly species associated with this unique habitat. In early September, the fields there are flush with grass-leaved blazing star that will attract uncommon skipper species and other late-summer butterflies for close observation. One example is the regionally rare and strikingly colored Leonard's Skipper, which is locally common at Soldiers Delight at this time of the year. The afternoon's activity will begin with a short slide presentation at 1:00 p.m. on the butterflies of the barrens. For the hike to follow, close-focus binoculars are recommended, but catch-and-release examination will be included. We will walk several trails, watching for wildlife, and visit the songbird and raptor banding stations at Kiptopeke. We will also learn about Monarch butterfly migration at Cape Charles. Cape May, NJ, an Audubon Naturalist Society Weekday Escape
ANS members: $45; Nonmembers: $63. (Does not include meals or lodging.) 9:00 am Sept. 20 - 5:00 pm Sept. 21. Leader: Hal Wierenga. Cape May, the southern tip of New Jersey, is a haven for naturalists in autumn. By late September, the migration season is at a peak, with many birds and Monarchs streaming past Cape May every day. Fall weekends are very crowded, however, so we're offering this excursion on a pair of weekdays. We'll spend some time at the famous Cape May hawk watch, watching for a dozen species of southbound raptors. The falcon migration typically reaches its peak on September's last few weeks; if weather conditions are favorable, we could see hundreds or even thousands of migrant Merlins, Peregrines, and Kestrels. We'll meet with researchers from Cape May's Monarch Monitoring Project and visit gardens where Monarchs and other butterflies may be abundant. Early Fall Butterflies of the Eastern Shore, an Audubon Naturalist Society Adult Foray

With expansive areas of wildflowers amongst the numerous fields and marshes in early fall, Dorchester County and the Choptank shoreline on Maryland's Eastern Shore are perfect sites in late September to fully observe the fall seasonal butterfly emigrations. Led by butterfly expert Dick Smith, we'll search for Great Purple Hairstreaks, Bronze Coppers, Sleepy Oranges, Monarchs, Buckeyes, Painted Ladies, and the various sulphurs and skippers, including (with luck) the Long-tailed Skipper. We'll stop and explore the edges of the best-known and productive field and wetland sites between Vienna and the Blackwater NWR and then proceed north to the trails of the Choptank Fishing Pier park, famous for great butterfly diversity at this time of year.
