1998 D.C. Butterfly Count

(sponsored by New Columbia Audubon Society)

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Visitors Center

Saturday, July 18, 11 a.m.

(following Audubon Naturalist Society's Wild Walk of the gardens, which begins at 9 a.m. at Deanwood Metro Station on the Orange LIne or at 9:15 at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Visitors Center)

Beginning at 11 a.m., we'll tour the park's ponds, marsh and wildflower meadow looking for butterflies, then move across the Anacostia to the Arboretum. There we'll tour the herb garden and meadows. If there's time and it's not too hot, we'll move on to Rock Creek Park's Nature Center in upper Northwest to finish about 4:30 p.m. Bring a lunch, water, sunscreen, etc. Also binoculars and field guides if you have them. $3 per person, collected that day, goes to the North American Butterfly Association to help defray costs of maintaining, analyzing, and publishing national statistics on hundreds of counts nationwide. To register, call Pat Durkin, 202-483-7965.
