1998 D.C. Butterfly Count

Beginning at 11 a.m., we'll tour the park's ponds, marsh and wildflower meadow looking for butterflies, then move across the Anacostia to the Arboretum. There we'll tour the herb garden and meadows. If there's time and it's not too hot, we'll move on to Rock Creek Park's Nature Center in upper Northwest to finish about 4:30 p.m. Bring a lunch, water, sunscreen, etc. Also binoculars and field guides if you have them. $3 per person, collected that day, goes to the North American Butterfly Association to help defray costs of maintaining, analyzing, and publishing national statistics on hundreds of counts nationwide. Directions to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens from the Beltway (Prince George's County side):

• Get off at Exit 19 (Route 50/New York Avenue):
• West on Route 50/New York Avenue toward Washington
• South on Kenilworth Avenue
• Move IMMEDIATELY into right lane and follow brown signs to the park
• Park in park lot and walk to visitor center.
